The Historic Rose Garden consists of antique roses brought together to preserve and protect these beautiful and endangered plants of our California heritage.

More than ten years ago, rosarians Barbara Oliva and Fred Boutin began planting this collection which has grown to nearly 500.  Abandoned farmyards, old cemeteries and neglected properties were scoured throughout northern California for roses which had survived despite abandonment and neglect.  Roses were located, cuttings taken (with permission, when available), plants were propagated and then planted into Cemetery plots which had fallen into disuse.  The result of this early work plus ongoing maintenance, propagation, deadheading and pruning is the garden depicted here.
